When My Body Smashed
Into The Sidewalk

16 stories by yuvi zalkow

The characters in these stories can't stop trying to connect with others: one character speaks after he is dead, one begs the reader to keep reading, one spies on a prostitute, one holds hands with a knife-wielding man on the bus. These characters reveal a part of themselves that they're most ashamed of, and by doing so, they walk away with something bigger than what they had before. A new piece of the world opens up.

Many of these stories are informed by my own background — suburban Jew, lost between the world of my Southern father (a child of Polish immigrants) and the world of my Israeli mother (who sang me to sleep in Hebrew). Then again, some stories are Jew-free.

Stories in this collection have been published in Carve Magazine, Rosebud, Storyglossia, Ellipses..., The Clackamas Literary Review, Cadillac Cicatrix, and other magazines. This collection also includes finalists or contest winners from Narrative Magazine, Glimmer Train, and Wordstock.
